Israel's majestic God does not lie or change His mind. He is not a human being - He does not change His mind. 1Samuel 15:29
The Lord our God is ever-faithful. His words are of comfort and hope.. He will never oppose what He said -- He was, He is, and He will..
God is not like us. Humans change minds for reasons that influenced our final decision. We are spontaneous and forgetful most of the times. What was said a moment ago was nothing unless it is done.
In the story of First Samuel Chapter 14, the heroes (Jonathan and a young man) were fearless for they believed that God was with them. And yes they won the battle because God was with them. This part is pretty amazing not until..
After the battle, Jonathan became arrogant. He committed a sin without knowing that it'll be punished with a curse (he may charge innocent and be forgiven). But he reacted with arrogance and pride, influencing the warriors (through his words) to almost forget the command of the Lord for they already have His favor.
And when Saul (Jonathan's father) asked the Lord if they should attack the Philistines, the Lord did not answer for they committed a sin. Saul gave his word that whoever sinned shall be put to death! Saul was willing to have his word be done, but the people saved Jonathan from his punishment for they believed God was with Jonathan when he won the battle, or worse they believed, Jonathan himself was the real hero.
Being a king, nobody, no one, no people can make you break your words you already spoken, but Saul did. He promised to the Lord, but because of people's demand, he broke his promise. With unanswered question whether to attack the Philistines or not, (and maybe with great shame), Saul decided to stop pursuing the Philistines. And once again, Israel missed the chance (actually it wasn't a chance, it was God's will) to defeat the enemy!
